Getting To The Root

 Of Pediatric Mental Health

Mental health is a key determinant of overall health and wellness. It is affected by various lifestyle factors such as chronic stress, sedentary lifestyle, poor nutrition, obesity, and substance abuse. Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Mental health disorders are common among children and adolescents. According to the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH), about 1 in 4 adults in the United States live with a mental illness (approximately 61.5 million people). Mental illness is not only common but also costly. The annual cost of mental illness in America is more than $193 billion. Mental health disorders can take a toll on productivity. They are associated with absenteeism from work and school and presenteeism, which is when people are working but not performing at their best because of their mental health condition. Mental health disorders also affect physical health. People with mental health disorders are more likely to have chronic medical conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and HIV/AIDS. Mental health is essential to overall health and well-being. It should be considered as important as physical health. Good mental health enables people to realize their full potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute fully to their community
